I believe in the power that comes from being a strong reader and writer. I am ready to guide your child on their learning journey to help them reach their full potential.

Services

  • Weekly, one-hour sessions focused on the personalized needs of the student. I provide reading and writing support for 2nd-8th grade students across all the major subject areas. Special focus is often placed on remediating lost instructional time in phonics, as well as creating strategies for students to independently write and edit better sentences and paragraphs. For students with dyslexia or other language-based learning disabilities, I incorporate assessment tools to develop customized lesson plans, informed by my training in Orton Gillingham.

  • I provide support to small groups (2-4 students) who need help staying focused, planning ahead, managing emotions and meeting personal goals. Students hone their executive functions with me through targeted exercises that help them succeed and better manage their busy school and personal lives. Sessions focus on completing current and long-term homework assignments, ensuring students read independently, helping students manage distractions and stay focused on tasks, and other outcomes.

Jamie Jensen -30 Years in Education

I started tutoring high school-age youth shortly after graduating with honors from Wellesley College. A few years later, I attended University of Michigan to pursue a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and educational assessment. I taught courses at Michigan in Education Psychology and Reading and Writing in the Content Areas to students studying to become middle and high school teachers. After completing my master’s in education, I joined the Rockefeller Foundation and shifted my focus to improving urban public schools across the United States. During the past 25 years, I have worked with, and learned from, the best teachers, parents, and scholars.

I recently returned to tutoring with a clear mission: to help school-age children and youth get to the next stage in their learning journey by becoming better readers and writers. My approach centers around nurturing the executive functions - the mental processes that enable kids to plan, focus attention, and juggle multiple tasks -- that all children and youth need to be life long, successful learners. I also completed additional training in Orton Gillingham at the Kildonan Institute in Kent, CT, and incorporate phonics-based strategies to work with readers who struggle with dyslexia and dysgraphia.
